Last weekend I went to National Park The Hoge Veluwe. It is nature reserve of approximately 55 square kilometers in area, consisting of heathlands, sand dunes, and woodlands. The reserve is, during this time of the year, especially known for its belling red deer stags.
I did some research where to be at what time and with success. I saw 3 stags and a total of about 50 hinds. 1 group was held by a stag that was not happy with the presence of other stags and went back into the woods. The other group was held by a stag that was thinking he was the best but suddenly a concert of belling started between the owner and a new stag. This was so impressive and ideal for taking some nice pictures.
After, let’s say, 20 minutes the hind where totally confused (or impressed) by the new stag that they started to follow him. And suddenly the group was kept by the new stag. The old one was trying in vain; he lost this battle and was forced to leave into the woods, without hinds.
I was so happy to see such an exceptional moment, and besides this I had some very good opportunities to make some nice photos.
Have a look into the mammals section and enjoy.
Thanks for watching this site.
